The FFXIV Palace of the Dead is a great place for players to visit if they want to level up after finishing off main scenario quests. Before we do so, we need to know more about the PotD itself, and how to unlock it in Final Fantasy XIV.
With that in mind, the following guide will outline:
- What is the Palace of the Dead in FFXIV?
- Where is it?
- How to Unlock the Palace of the Dead
- The Gear and Loot System
What is the Palace of the Dead in FFXIV?
Essentially, the Palace of the Dead, often abbreviated to PotD, is a bit of a game within a game, if you will. It offers its own levelling, loot, and gear system for you to explore, with rogue-like elements for you to enjoy.
This area is a dungeon which will be ever-changing. Every time you enter this area, you will notice that the locations within are different in a way whenever you decide to enter the depths of this exciting dungeon. You start out at level one, before going through battling the enemies that are found within. This will allow you to gain more experience and strength that’s needed to advance your character even further.
The PotD has a floor system, going from 1 to 200. You don’t need any armour to get started, and you can play solo or with friends. Players will select the level that they want to enter into, with two slots available for them to save in. Each step represents 10 floors, with a boss occurring every 10th floor, going all the way up to level 200. After the 50th floor, you are able to start from floor 50 whenever you reset your progress, so you can just pick up from here without the need to go back and play the previous stages.
You start at level 1 no matter what your class or job level is. You can gain experience up to level 60 in the Palace of the Dead, though it isn’t connected to your level outside of the dungeon. The dungeon experience that you earn is from enemies, all of which have a fixed amount of XP attached to them. This is the case regardless of how many members are in your party, nor does the difference in level between you and the enemy matter either. Note that XP bonuses don’t count, nor does rested experience.
You will be restricted to Aetherpool gear here, with the aetherpool arm and aetherpool armour to be used when inside the Palace of the Dead. You will need to enhance these items as you make your way through the dungeon. It will have the same appearance of the gear you have at the moment you enter the PotD, though normal gear has no effect on your character’s attributes. Even though you are limited to using this gear type, you will be pleased to know that it is not subjected to durability loss, and it cannot gain spiritbond whilst you are inside the dungeon.
Where is the FFXIV PotD?
This will probably be the next burning question you have. To find the Palace of the Dead, you need to head to Quarrymill over in the South Shroud. Just going here to speak to the relevant NPC is not the only task that faces you, however.
How to Unlock the FFXIV Palace of the Dead
To actually unlock the PotD, we first need to get ourselves to level 17 in whatever our desired fighting class is. After that, you can go to New Gridania, where you need to speak to Nojiro Marujiro. This will grant you the “House That Death Built” quest.
As mentioned earlier, we need to go to the Quarrymill in the South Shroud next. Here, speak to the designated NPC and you will be able to begin. Keep in mind that you need to have completed the main quest “Into a Copper Hell” first to make sure it shows up.
Gear and Loot System
The Palace of the Dead boasts its own Gear and Loot system too. As you traverse the many floors of the PotD, you will notice that there are a variety of chests that can be found. These said chests are found in bronze, silver, and gold. You do need to have your wits about you when checking these chests, however. The reason being is that yes, some can indeed offer you loot. However, there are others that may be trapped, mimics, or even explosive. So its best to watch out for what you are getting when checking these chests.
Firstly, we have bronze chests, which are able to offer loot currencies that can be traded when you are outside of the Palace of the Dead, as well as potions. Then there’s silver chests, which give you the opportunity to upgrade the gear which you have here, which includes aetherpool arms and armour. Golden chests meanwhile have Pomanders, which can be very useful to you. This is because they have the ability for you to augment the loot that you receive. You can also use them to reduce the number of enemies that you face, and ultimately help take you to glory.
Like a lot of aspects of games like FFXIV, Palace of the Dead can be more fun with friends, so you should definitely consider joining a party if possible. This will eliminate a lot of the grind involved, and feel free not to warn your friends about frog traps! It is overall an effective way for you to level up, so you should certainly consider using the FFXIV Palace of the Dead to continue your levelling experience. It is just one of the many features that Final Fantasy 14 has to offer, as MMORPG fans continue to enjoy the wealth of content that the game has to offer, including the PotD to help their character advance even further into the wide world of FFXIV.
